Abstract

One of the critical elements and functions in the management of organizations in general is the cost analysis of their assets. Especially in the case where the specific fixed assets are also the main driver for generating revenue and profit for the organization, this analysis is especially important in an era where the survival of an organization lies in the proper and efficient use of its assets. This is more pronounced in cases where the activity concerns areas of the economy with economies of scale, such as that of the shipping industry. In this paper, the issue of cost analysis on two bulk carriers is examined, as well as the examination of the changes that will be brought about by the rapid and rapid digitization of the operations of shipping companies. Data was collected for two bulk carriers, one Panamax and one Capesize. The data related to the operating costs of the ships in the period 2019-2022. The analysis of the data showed that the Panamax class vessel was on time charter throughout, and its operating costs had a steady increase over the period linked to the general state of the industry and related market, while the Capesize vessel was found not to time chartered in 2019 and then back into service. At the same time, the vessel has increased operating costs that make it less attractive, based on the current state of the industry.
